alternator fitting

Post by philip jones 51 »

When fitting an alternator to my 1968 pickup do I have to fit , as shown in most electrical diagrams, a control 4tr unit, relay 6ra and warning light unit-3aw.
Been informed that alternator pack handles the whole works.
Also have fitted the alternator on its own and smoke emmitted from it so disconnected and lead to alternator via starting solenoid got very hot indeed.
Still system being positive earth and thanks for your help in advance.
Regards,
PHILIP JONES.

The alternator connection circuit is at the top of the electrical section. The car MUST be negative earth - you have probably ruined the alternator. The 4TR/6RA etc are only used with very early 11AC alternators - some of which WERE available for +ve earth cars.

Alternators seem very delicate - if there was smoke coming from it you have probably killed it beyond repair...

They don't work with positive earth!

[bold has been edited - , thanks lambrettalad! Not a good mistake to make as OP has found out]

Look for Technical Tips on the Home page and go to Negative Earth.....detailed instructions
On the Message Board, under Electrical, you will find a Sticky for the Alternator wiring change.
