At the risk of demonstrating my ignorance wouldn't be worth adding a jubilee clip to the red pipe where it connects to the clutch cylinder pipe or is that something else entirely?

To combat the weight and drag of the roof rack, you could remove a few of the nuts on the battery clamp

Well I didn't cure the oil leak. I improved it, but it's still there.
I now suspect that the o ring on the base on the release bearing shaft has failed.
My options are:
1. Drive round France aware of the leak and topping up the box,
Or
2. Engine out again and do a proper job.

The trouble is that I'mrunning out of time and want to get an mot beforee I go.

It depends how bad the leak is and how much time you have left really.
I'd say there is a lot of benefit in having "shake down" time just driving the car.
You will soon work out how often you need to check the oil and will achieve pit stop type speed in topping it up.

I'm not sure there is an O ring where you suggest and surely the level is lower than the main shaft?

It was my shake down driving that found the oil leak again. There is an o ring, it is around the alloy shaft that the release bearing slides on. It fits from inside the bell housing and sandwiches between the front of the gearbox and the back of the bell housing. On the marina/Ital box there doesn't seem to be any other oil seal at the front of the box. Silly design really. I've ordered a box of o rings and a gearbox gasket set and booked a day off work. Watch this space!

Right time to find that oil leak!

I took the engine and gearbox out again on Monday to finally try an cure that oil leak.

I split the gearbox from the engine to find evidence of a leak, although not as bad as I was expecting.


There was evidence of oil dripping from a hole in the shaft that the clutch release bearing slides along. It looks like a drain hole. All I can think is that it is there to prevent oil leaking past the bearing from tracking down the inside of the shaft and into the clutch.
The shaft was also loose, implying that the o ring was not being compressed and so allowing oil to leak past.

I'm not an instant gasket fan.....



The new o ring is the one on the left. There is also a new oil seal waiting to be fitted.


I was not the first person to change that oil seal evidently! Someone has made a hash of it in the past. I burnt mine out so as to prevent this kind of damage. I gave it a quick skim in the lathe just to take the high spots off the burs, and fitted a new seal.




New o ring in place....

The whole job took about 10 hours start to finish. Not too bad, I couldn't have done that with my Saab! I love working on Moggies.

Seems to have done the trick anyway. Oil leak cured!

Tuesday was MOT day. After a morning of playing around, fitting a cig lighter etc I took her for a run to the test.
One pass with no advisories.

So we are heading off to France on our holidays soon. My other half's brother is getting married in Cannes, in the south of France and most of the family are heading there by plane. We on the other hand are going in the only proper way possible.........

Hi,
You're doing a good job on the old girl and when you decide to swap back to original steels I reckon those Cosmic wheels will help recoup a good chunk of you costs easily, for one thing they appear to be in really good condition, I'm surprised you haven't had an offer from one of the modders on here.
Shame the front over-riders would interfere with your driving lights under the bumper.
