Van wheels..

Post by Manxman »

Can anyone give a definitive answer regarding the size of van wheels. My 1968 van, which I'm about half way through a full restoration, clearly has wider rear wheels. My question is were they originally fitted at birth or are the vans meant to have same size wheels all round?

van rims are only fitted on 8cwt vans. 6cwt vans had standard saloon rims. most 8cwt vans was produced between 1969 to 1972. also 8cwt vans had a extra leaf on the rear spring and uprated suspension leg in that they have a thicker steering arm. vans rims are 4.5j lp 917 or even rarer lp936. Also they would have had a set of five on a van as spare would have been a van rim also :D these are superb rims and would recomend to anyone.... they will fit on all minors inc saloons and travellers.... id go 155 80 14 or 165 70 14 on my van, some may agree or disagree but i find them spot on and the speedo is very acurate :)

The 165 X 70 tyres are probably 'pushing it' slightly, but to be honest - If I didn't have a pile of 155 X 80 to work through, I would go the 165 X 70 route on the 4.5 J van wheels.

I'd recommend either 155 or 165 tyres on the LP917 rims.
The only caveat I would give with the 165 tyres is that you get minimal clearance to the front top trunion.
Therefore before buying 5 new 165's I'd get one and double check (just in case the particular tyre make / brand / type has wider sidewalls)

LP 936 were after-market rims and the inners was just reversed so all the off set could be seen on the front rather than the rear. Rim size is the same. 165 are OK and I have used them for years

Thank you very much for all the information, very helpful indeed. Sorry for the delay in responding, I seem to spend every waking hour in the garage working on the project, I've been told that this quite normal for a Moggy restoration..

Tut Tut, you have been allowing yourself sleep... :)

If you are not worried about originality ESM sell wide rims (4.5J), good for 165's they say but out of stock at the moment

They also have some 'B' grade stock slightly cheaper but in stock.....

For wider rims, Weller wheels now sell 5.5J rims.
