Engine prices :D

Post by Sparticus »

Hi everyone :D

I've got a friend who has recently discovered, in his back garden scrap yard, a marina 1300 engine with gearbox and carb. He doesn't want it/wont use it and said give him an offer for it. I could see that i is a bit rusty in the rockers but don't know how rusty it'll be in the bores? So my question is how much should i offer? It'll need a rebuild for sure!

He also has a fiat twin cam, 1600 or 2 lt i think, with gearbox and 3 cylinder heads and all anchilaries.. same question applies!

Thanks community :P

Not knowing if the engines are any good, then scrap value is the only guide.

Ring up a scrap metal dealer and ask how much you'd be offered for a scrap engine and use that as a guide.

I got offered £10 for my scrap Yaris gearbox.

Buy him a drink and take them away.

^^^^ Crikey - was that a 'delivered' price Denis??? I was going to suggest no more than £50 for the marina engine - realise it's likely to cost ~ £500 for you to rebuild it for use.......

I must say, it's a good time to sell a 1275 at the moment. They seem to be fetching good no matter the condition. Strangely, on ebay last week i saw a very rusty (externally) engine, no offers of condition, sold for £310. It's a lot of money as you say Roy, but that is just what the price is.
Same as with the Mini's, people will soon get priced out of 1275's so will look to modify their current engine (drive prices up of 295 heads though!).

I know in my old Mini, it was far too expensive to buy a 1275, so i built the 1215 rocket mobile! ha!

A bare 1275cc thick flange MG Midget block has just changed hands on 'e' bay for 187 pounds and it still wanted work doing to it. I would agree that 1275cc engines do seem to fetch premium prices these day. MG Midget cranks in good condition seem to command even higher prices if you can find one that is. I had to pay 500 pounds for one in superb condition and that took me over 6 months to find; and then I had to pay the same to bring it up to racing spec. Unfortunaly spare 1275cc engine are a deminishing item and as they are not made any more the price will go up even higher. So if you see a cheap 1275cc no matter whether it is a marina or MG Midget grab it while you can!

Around £150 for the marina engine, the gearbox is pretty much scrap value though i'd imagine.
