Leaks around the wiper wheel box

Post by jagnut66 »

Hi,
Just thought I'd post this up for anyone else who's suffered a leak where the wiper wheel box exits through the body of the car to connect to the wiper arm.
I've suffered for a leak around both of mine ever since I bought her, obviously the original rubber had perished and whilst you can still get the gasket for the chrome embellishers, there doesn't appear to be anywhere (and I have looked) where you can get any sort of rubber seal for where it actually goes through the body.............. :(
Then I discovered this stuff on the 'Frost' site:

As you can see it comes in little sachets (you need to specify the colour), one of which is plenty for one wiper, with a little left over; I think trying to use one for both wipers would be spreading it too thinly though.
It its very malleable, feels like semi- moltern candle wax, bonds beautifully, and as it takes 24 hours to turn to rubber (note I didn't say set as it feels like rubber once it's gone off) you have plenty of time to shape it, which I also found very simple with just my fingers and a medium sized flat bladed screwdriver.
Now please note what I have done may not look perfect, this was my first time with this stuff but I now have a dry car!!
Well it doesn't leak from the area of the wipers anymore anyway (tested with the garden hose!)........ just all the other screen rubbers in heavy rain  ....that's the next job......

Like I said not the neatest job but you get the idea and this picture is close up.....
First thing (actually the first thing to do is wash your hands, as the instructions stipulate they need to be clean), obviously, is to strip the wiper arms , nuts, embellishers and old gaskets off.
I then pushed the compound into the gaps around the wiper wheel box where it exits through the body, then replaced the embellisher in conjunction with a new gasket to help push the still malleable compound into the area under the embellisher as well as around it and then tightened the nut.
Then carried on moulding / trimming / adding to the mix until I had something which I was happy with. I could have played for hours..... (and you may be thinking I should have!! )
Once I had done both sides I just walked away and left it to go off.
Based on what I've done you may wish to try with less but it does for the everyday working car and beats having a leak!
I'm sure in more skilled hands than mine a really neat job could be achieved and this could be made to be 'out of sight'.
Anyway this is great stuff, it really does what it says on the tin (so to speak) :D and, if I didn't already have replacement screen rubbers, I would have tried it in the areas where I have water ingress to see if it would plug this too.
However with plenty of sachets left over I will always have this option for the future.
Best wishes,
Mike.

Be aware that it has a fairly limited shelf life (6 months), if you have other projects for it then do them sooner rather than later.

Thanks Mark / Paul.
Even if I don't find another use myself in those six months it will still have been worth the purchase price for fixing the leak around the wipers alone.
