Kingpins - brassy finish

Post by moggiegeek »

having just cleaned up a pair of kingpins I can see that each trunion thread appears to have been sprayed with brass and recut, whereas the new items are steel. Were these interim "fixes" when kingpins were in short supply or is there another explanation?

Well - brass would last about 5 minutes........sure it's not just 'copper slip' applied to the threads?

No not copperslip - when very clean - it has this brassy finish to the metal - big contrast to the steel of the remainder.

Maybe spraryed with phosphor bronze - something like that. Are the trunnions a good fit?

Yes -I can't detect any movement in them when clean and ungreased. I found out - probably to my cost that the suspension clunking was a) rubber in top link and b) eye bolt bushes. Phospher bronze makes sense and then the thread was recut.

Huge improvements by fitting polyurethane bushes top and bottom.
