The alternative method is to use a wooden clothes peg to hold it out, the peg is then clipped to the stem of the rear view mirror
I will tell my husband about twisting and clamping it at the carb end...and then if THAT doesn't work, I DO happen to have a good supply of wooden clothes-pins laid in, so.... yeah, if all else fails, that ought to get it!
