Verly slow... VERY fast!

Post by Arthurdaily »

Had an issue with my Morris ever since the rebuild, and that is that it goes very very very slowly... It will go at 60 but makes a din... anyway, took my sat nav today as was going over to visit a member in St Helens, and guess what... turns out that 60 was actually over 75! Dear lord! No wonder my wife kept telling me to slow down!!

Not sure why this is, partly the wrong speedo and partly a messed up cable I'm guessing.

The speedo in my 71 1098 with standard 4.22 diff is a SN4423/00 1504 - which, from my reading, is not meant for a 4.22 diff - but rather a 4.55, is that right? this would thus make it under read - is that right? But by how much? ? ?

Also, am I right in thinking I actually need a 1408? What about the main serial number - does that matter, or is it just this four digit code that matters? For example would this suite my Minor better:

Thank you!

Yup. Wrong speedo there. That's from a 950 engined car from 1957-1962 ish.

It's only 100 in 1500 out - ie 1 in 15 or about 7% or so. So - no - doesn't really explain the difference - especially as they all read a few % fast when new..... But then the speedo may have been tampered with, needle put on wrong place, something like that. Look for any 1408 speedo. It won't be the cable if the needle is steady enough at speed.

The needle was all over the place as well - so I took the inner out and cleaned it then very very lightly smeared it with copper grease... runs much steadier now... still says I'm doing 30 when in reality 35 or more... the difference gets more acute as the car gets faster. Right, I'll try a new speedo. Thank you chaps.

Of course - the car may not have a 4.22 final drive.....could be a 3.9 or even a 3.7 !! You need to check.....

Hmnnn... true - but I did jack up the back ages ago and I turned the engine over 4 and a quarter times which turned the rear wheels twice if I remember... that means it's a 4.22 doesn't it?

Any other way of telling - will it be stamped?

It will be stamped. Turn the prop once in top gear, count the rear wheel revolutions.

Does seem to be a 4.22 then! If the speedo is now 'steady' - you could just reposition the needle and test again.
