I wouldn;t even have let it go back without the money in my hand.just go and take it back,as suggested. Its your car not his, don't give him the chance to sell it on and just give you the price he gets for it.Thats what he will do,some dealer eh,any reputable dealer would simple comply with the sale of goods act...if its not fit for purpose than full refund, replacement or repair... But the choice is yours to decide not the dealer,he has no control over it,you have the upper hand.. Again go to the trading standards they love dealing with this sort of trader.

To be honest, to own and run a classic, you need to be prepared to learn basic car mechanic principles.
You need to buy a hand book, look up our suggestions of repair and start that learning curve.
I got the impression Jonathan1967 didn't have this basic knowledge and was a bit out of his depth (like me once). Perhaps wrongly thinking, like a modern car you can just start and go every day trouble free..ish.
I love driving my '53 and I'm sure Jonathan1967 would/will. But, you really need to be prepared to put the overalls on and have a dabble.

My thoughts too, what will happen with the next issue the car has?

Perfect attitude really, I don't blame you for being unhappy with the dealer, who wouldn't be?
The bonnet release handle is under the right hand side of the dash, have a look or a feel around for it.
There will be problems of some sort, nothing lasts forever, plenty of good advice freely available here.

Re: Morris Minor 1956 Series II
Agree, the right attitude indeed.
Things do go wrong. For example mine was running like a bag of nails, thinking it was hunting and running rich I weakend the mixture and it cut out and wouldn't start.
Anyway, realising that a car doesn't start when set too weak (after returning to the house in a huff) and some new spark plugs later all is fine again now. But I've learned something.
I'll reset the mixture more accurately next weekend, but I got the car started again. Three years ago, I wouldn't have known what a distributor is, let alone a low tension lead or a rotor arm etc.
When something goes wrong, there is a very simple process of elimination, we can can teach you this. I've managed it and that's saying something really lol.

Re: Morris Minor 1956 Series II
A Morris Minor is not like a modern car whch never needs checking between services. Oil and water need checking/topping up regularly, lots of nipples to grease and brakes have to be kept in top condition. Spend an hour or two with a workshop manual under the bonnet identifying the components.

Well done - the 'Old Persons' Manual will be perfect
Glad you saw the sense to get it back. Just carry a spare gallon for now - worry about the gauge once you are more relaxed about the car.

Re: Morris Minor 1956 Series II
I managed to get hold of an old Autopress- Workshop manual which covers the series II split screen. The first thing I will do is check the engine oil level.

A good start - oil check should be done every single week and before any long journey.

Any of the parts suppliers should have the correct blades
