Half shaft?

Post by AlTroakex »

Recently bought a 68' pick up, and is my second Moggie since passing my test at 17 last June.

I was driving through town and stopped behind a bus at some lights, as I was starting to pull away I heard a massive bang (like someone had gone into me) and had no drive. My uncle knows a bit about older vehicles and as we towed it to my garage he had a look and he thought it was the near side half shaft.

All I really want to know is if it could be anything else, and if it is the half shaft, are they sided and is it a difficult job?

Many thanks, Al.

old ones become sided,as they wear
need to replace both sides and if second hand keep the to the same side, you can tell by the wear marks .
could it be your diff? good luck :D
Cheers Alex

It will be a half shaft - which side is anybodys guess (although I do think nearside tend to break more frequently) - but it doesn't matter because you will need to pull both out to get the final drive out of the axle - to remove the broken stub and to clear the debris from the casing.... New shafts are not handed in any way, but once used they should continue to be used on the same side...

Looking on ESM they're selling second hand ones for £25 ea (I think, page won't reload)
Is it worth changing both sides if that's the case? Imagine there will be some gaskets and other parts needed etc?

Wise to use new gasket and seal for peace of mind.
