morris minor burble
hello my Morris minor has the standard exhaust. the one thing the car doesn't do is burble could anyone explain why my car doesn't do it. the car was parked up for 20 years before I had it. I just like the noise and would like my car to do it. the exhaust has also been painted at some point and looks quite black many thanks

Re: morris minor burble
It does vary between cars for some reason.
I was concerned that fitting a stainless exhaust might stop it but it didn't.
If the car is standard I'd look at the carb to be sure the piston falls with a good clunk.
The burble happens on the over run so this may play a part.

Re: morris minor burble
It seems to be that new exhausts do it best, and as they build up with carbon inside in time, this muffles and mutes it.
My sisters Minor had a new stainless system when restored, and burbled like a trooper. My dads Minor has had a stainless system on since we got it (1994) and hasn't given a hint of burbling in my memory (...I was 5 when we got it though).

I'm no expert but have heard that it has something to do with how far the end of the exhaust pipe sits from the back bumper.
It could relate to pressure differentials around the rear of the car.

Re: morris minor burble
Apparently the trademark noise can be tuned out completely by increasing the length of the tailpipe. So the question is what length exhaust do you have fitted for one thing.
Re: morris minor burble
the exhaust length is original length and looks to be the original exhaust but was painted to protect it from rust and looks full of carbon inside the exhaust perhaps its time for a new exhaust

Re: morris minor burble
I have a 6in chrome extension on the end of the stainless steel exhaust on my Series MM which finishes just beyond the back bumper. It makes the exhaust a lot quieter from inside the car.
Travellers and vans seem to have the noisiest exhausts despite having different systems, maybe it is because of the body shapes

That would be because there's little to insulate you from the rear doors. On a saloon, the boot area (where the exhaust will echo) is closed off by the back seat - just drive around with the back seat down and you'll notice the difference!mike.perry wrote:Travellers and vans seem to have the noisiest exhausts despite having different systems, maybe it is because of the body shapes

Re: morris minor burble
I will reword my last statement.
Travellers and vans appear to have noisier exhausts when heard from the outside.
My Series MM seemed to be quieter from the inside after fitting the extension

Re: morris minor burble
Oh, right. I can understand vans (and pickups) sounding different, as their system is shorter in overall length, but travellers... no, you've lost me! Their exhausts are identical to the saloons!

Re: morris minor burble
I know that travellers have the same exhaust as saloons but for some reason they have more of a rasp. Can't check on my traveller as I have an LCB two box silencer system. I would be interested to hear what it sounds like with the back box swapped for a normal tail section

Re: morris minor burble
And the shape of the traveller rear bumper, it makes a very effective noise reflector if the exhaust finishes before it.
I improved matters on my friends traveller by fitting a tailpipe extension to move it outboard past the bumper.

Re: morris minor burble
If the exhaust isn't blowing, save your money and keep as is. The rasp isn't critical and I wouldn't recommend setting fire to anything. No going back if you can't put it out.

OMG NO! Why risk your motor by setting it on fire

Cheers Alex

Re: morris minor burble
Daft idea.
Have you checked the carb piston yet?
Is everything standard or do you have a pancake air filter or some such fitted?

Re: morris minor burble
obviously I would of took the exhaust of the car but some one told me if you set fire to the exhaust of the car with paraffin in gets rid of all the carbon in the exhaust.
