New type "O" rings for valves Help.

Post by boydogs »

Sent off to Bull Motifs for rubber "O" rings for valves on 950 head, There was two types, Normal "O" ring type and then a recommended replacement for above. This is a cup seal type about half an inch top to bottom with a round wire inside. The problem is i don`t know where it fits on the valve stem. Taking the old valves out there was a normal "O" ring on the lower part of stem and another rubber flat seal just under collets. Also the new rubber "O" rings look to small to fit the valve stem is this correct. Thanks boydogs.

The new type seals are much better than the old O type, BUT... they fit on a new type valve guide that has a little notch into which the new seals locate. To use the new seals you need the new guides. However, the reduced oil consumption is definitely worth it.

The cup seal fits over the end of the valve guide - only fit them on the inlets. BUT - unless you have new guides with a groove in the end - the seals will just slip off. So yes - these seals are much better - but only with new guides with the groove for the seal to lock in to.

Yes. Getting them (the rubber rings) warm first makes it a bit easier.

Thankyou very much, both of you have been a great help.If i do decide to fit these new type valve guides, where do i get them from ? I have checked out Charles wares and Bull Motifs but they don`t show them on their websites. Thanks again and thank goodness for the Forum.

Always worth checking the Mini suppliers - often less expensive too.

Go for the later a-series valve stem oil seals, they don,t have the wire ring which locates on the valve stem. they have ridges inside the seal to grip on the guide. They work very well on early motors. Any motor factors can get them.

They won't grip the guide for long unless it has the later groove in the o/d.
