Indicators stopped working on my pops Morris Minor 1000 Ute

Post by Caveman »

Hey everyone, I'm trying to look after my Grandfathers Morris Minor 1000 ute since he passed, He wished it to be a daily driver but shortly after his passing the registration ran out and some faults started popping up in the car which I would like to fix before it gets registered.

We went to take a trailer load of trash to the dump and got maybe 5 minutes down the road before we noticed that the indicators weren't working, we turned around took it back to the house where it has stayed in the shed.

Both left and right indicators front and back aren't working when I first flicked the indicator stalk left to right there were no sounds or anything. So I peaked inside the Engine bay and found on the right side of it, There was a wire not connected(Uploaded a photo, marked which wire with a red circle) cause the little screw holding it in it's place had fallen out or something, so I took a screw that fit cut it down about halfway and screwed it in..I flick the indicator stalk again and I get a single "tick" as the relay switch flips from the Relay box (DB10 box?) I've cleaned all the terminals moved the earth wire to a new location and cleaned up the new earth spot and I'm still only getting a single "tick" noise..

All other electrics work (brake lights, radio, heater) so any help would be AWESOME!
Also, I'm no mechanic I don't really know what I'm doing unless I'm changing the oil, topping up the water in the radiator but I just wanna see my pops car back on the road where it belongs.
Like I said any help on this would be AWESOME! and very muchly appreciated. Thanks Guys[frame]Image[/frame]

Take all the green wires off the can - discard any black ones...... join the green ones together temporarily and try the indicators. They should come on (not flashing) and this tests all the wiring and bulbs. If all is well - you need a new flasher can. Just to add -0 this assumes standard wiring - and from that picture I'm not sure what you have there!

Welcome to the forum.
What year car is it?
What colour wires are on the flasher relay?
Looks like someone may have converted it to flashing amber indicators.

The flasher unit should have a light green wire from P to warning light, a green feed wire to B and green/brown wire from L to indicator switch. Disconnect green and green/brown and connect them together. Ignition on, indicator switch on and the indicator bulbs should light but not flash. If yes then flasher is faulty, if no check green is live.
If you have flashing brake lights with a relay these tests may not apply

Hey all

So as it turns out if you look in the picture of mine just to the left of the circle is another screw and wire after looking at a diagram and thinking logically I found that I just had to swap the 2 wires over and it'd work...So now the car's indicators are working but the Indicator lights inside the car won't light up so that'll be for tommorow

By that do you mean the indicator warning light bulb in the speedo or the green one at the end of the indicator stalk?

In both cases it may just mean that the bulbs have blown.

Never saw a light on the end of the indicator stalk so it's probably been blown for years or it's not there, But I have seen them on other Morris, The lights aren't in the speedo, they're sat either side of it.

Took some photo's of the ute but can't find the cable to upload, will do asap.

Did however find some photos on the hard drive of his original sedan, the tyre in the boot is the original spare, everything is original, it had one owner throughout its lifetime with a friend of my Pops acquiring it from her and passing it to him shortly after that.

Figured I'd share the photos so you guys could appreciate it like I do *grin

Your 3rd and 4th pictures, you see the green at the end of the indicator stalk, do you have something like that or something different? There'll be a little bulb in there that may have blown. Or maybe the wire from the flasher can in the engine bay to the bulb is broken.

The ute doesn't have an indicator stalk with a bulb on the end just a normal black one

The car in your pictures has the flashing stalk.
I wouldn't call it a ute though, I was expecting a pick up truck.

Seems to be a bit of confusion here so to clarify - the indicator problem relates to a pick up but the photos relate to a saloon:

Oops, that's what the flashing stalk looks like anyway.

Yea sorry, still haven't been able to upload photos of the ute/pickup we call em utes here in AUS but yes the white car has the bulb on the indicator stalk but the ute just has a black indicator stalk.

The ute still has a problem with the indicator lights either side of the speedo and can't check now cause I had to steal the utes battery to get mums old morris started (sitting up behind the shed for 15 years still had a full tank just needed a battery and tyre pump up) but now the battery is flat and needs a charge.

There are not usually indicator warning lights either side of the speedo and the indicator switch sounds like it is not the standard switch. Does it do anything else besides the indicators? What year is the ute? Need to know or could be giving you wrong info

Urgh, I don't know what you mean by "Does it do anything else besides the indicators?" do you mean the indicator stalk? If you push it towards the steering wheel it honks the horn I thought it did the lights aswell but it has a pull-lever next to the starter for the lights.
No idea on the year, would I be able to get it from the chassis and engine number code thingy?

Got the pictures of the ute and the indicator lights either side of the speedo

You appear to have a later BMC indicator stalk which was never fitted to the Minor. Push in for horn, up and down for indicators and forward and back for dip and main beam.
Still need to know year of ute, what lights are fitted front and rear (photos)

From the pictures it's been modified quite a bit, at a guess the stalk is a Mini one.
One of the other warning lights has probably been wired up as the one for the indicators, all you need to do is trace the wire from the flasher unit :o

If it was a 62 - 64 car then it could have the relay for flashing brake/indicator lights which would be a different problem
