Indicator Issue

Post by johnirue »

Help please, I've just replaced a rusty old side light/indicator unit with a new one. However instead of the indicator
working the side light flashes. I'm sure I've put the connectors back as they were and I've even tried swapping, but to
no avail. What am I missing? any help would be very much appreciated. The car is a 1970 model with the side lights/ indicators in the same unit.

Check the earth wire is secure.
Check red wire to side light and green/white or green/red wire to indicator bulb.

Thanks, wires all check out correctly.

Going with the earth fault, I've started by removing/cleaning the one on the same
side wing. Sorry to sound dim, but is it a case of working through all the earth
connections, or is there a better way?

I've also tried reconnecting the old light unit and the fault is there also, so don't
really know how long its been like this.

Is there a black earth cable connected to the light unit?

O.K progress is this; no matter what I do with the earth wire, it does not make a difference,
however if I earth the new unit seperately......it works. Why is this? there was no seperate
earth to this unit before, and the fitting looks the same.
So the problem has gone away, but I don't undrstand it.

Thanks for the help.

If you have found a way to make it work then that is OK

Obviously your 'earth wire' is not connected to a good earth!

Hi
Recently had exactly the same problem as John and totally baffled all week until I read this.
Extra earth wire from new unit to frame solved the problem straight away but there was already an earth wire there from before so I also assumed that wasn't the problem!
So why don't they put one on the unit the unit I wonder?
God I love this forum
