Following on from your comments on the Wheeler Dealer blog.

I think you ought to start preparing the grill, prepare some some seasoning and a little side salad for that hat of yours.

OK it is not a Morris Minor.

Rover P5 MK11 1966. Mileage 74.000.
Advertised as not running very well and no reverse gear, spotted on Ebay last Friday afternoon..

Phoned the owner straight away and got a story where the car had to go to a good home as space needed and they could not afford the repairs which a mechanic quoted as a few thousand pounds.
I purchased the car over the phone and collected it the next morning at 8.00am,with cash in hand and a trailer.

I put the car in my workshop Saturday afternoon and got on with fixing it.
A new set of spark plugs and a few ignition leads had the straight six engine purring.
Adjusting the brake bands in the auto box had reverse gear working.

Cost of car.....£650.00

I just had to buy it at that price.
Right place ,right time, act very fast (do not dither) and most important..cash in hand.

Hi,
Rover P5's are lovely cars, now that it's fixed I hope you have many happy hours behind the wheel.
My only criticism, niggle really, would be that they never came with a manual box, that's just personal preference though.
Best wishes,
Mike.

Very nice too.
I am not normally one for chopping motors or customising them, but I did see one of these in plain grey with a set of 6j wolf race wheels fitted and the suspension lowered,it looked absolutely marvelous.

I only picked up the car last Saturday,I have been busy checking it over and sorting out the jobs mentioned.
Hope to give it a run this weekend.
Yes as you mention this is an automatic, they did fit a manual box in some of the cars, but most people purchased the automatic,a bit like the Jaguars of the 1960`s.
I have a Daimler Sovereign 420 1967 manual with overdrive,quite a rare car now.

3 litres came as auto or manual - 3.5's only came as autos.

As can be seen this is a P5 MK11 3ltr saloon 1964.
Which they built with manual or automatic transmission.

The 3.5ltr car is a P5B,this car came out in 1967, B stands for Buick, who developed the engine but sold the production rights to Rover.
The manual gearbox Rover were using at the time was not strong enough to cope with the torque of the V8 engine.
So they fitted the Borg Warner type 35 automatic gearbox.

They later went on to develope the Leyland 5 speed box.

I stand corrected but I've never seen a P5 (3ltr or 3.5V8) with a manual box.

If I am correct the manual gearbox fitted in the P5 was the same or similar to the Rover P4 gearbox.

Sigh... I'll need some ketchup
Seriously, there's - allegedly - always a bargain somewhere, but somehow I only seem to read about them rather than see them live!

There was a Triumph Spitfire on Autotrader recently for £500. Must have been as good as it sounded because it was gone in a day.
