It's just an alternator in another guise - I'd be certain it is wired up as an alternator, so perhaps not very original.
I also wondered if, since it is based on an alternator, you need a different sized pulley?
It is possible to keep the coil in its original position with alternator - I've just done it! Fingolfin extended the dynamo bracket, I took inspiration from David Miles's thread and used the dynamo bracket and adjuster to mount the coil on the dynamo.
