There Are Still Good Value Travellers Out there If You Lucky

Post by Morris Mike »

With the recent price rises of Morris Minor Travellers over the last few years it is now getting hard to find decent cars at an affordable price to purchase and improve on cosmetically.
Everyone is jumping on the boom and asking high prices for cars that need far too much work to bring them up to scratch.

I viewed Travellers that needed on inspection a complete re-wooding at £4,000.
Patched up disasters at £3750.00.
Cosmetically challenged ones that needed a respray, new interior, rattly engine and worn out suspension etc advertised for £3,500.

I viewed three cars on Monday at the £4,000 mark, all were rubbish.

Just a couple of years ago I could pick up a decent vehicle for just under the £2,000 price tag ,that with a respray, new interior, new chrome and a tidy up of the engine bay were then valued in the £5,500 price bracket.

Just to show if you look hard enough there are still bargains to be had.
Right place, right time and right vendor.

I picked up this little cracker a few days ago.
Genuine 68,000 miles.
4 previous owners.
Excellent original timberwork.
Mot`d. No advisories.
Very good original or correctly repaired underside.
Good straight car with good door shuts and wing lines etc.

A few cosmetic jobs are needed to the interior...drivers seat squab repair, new side rear panels and hardura carpet required.
I am replacing the nearside timber foot because it has been filled and lets down the quality of the other timberwork.
It starts, drives and stops as it should.Engine and gearbox really sweat.
Good chrome,paint and body.

A weeks work will bring this really up to scratch,I do like things right.!!!!.

Price to me £2,100.

That looks fantastic! only 68,000 too?! Do you think that people prefer travellers having lighter colored wood or heavily varnished? Very jealous of that paint work :P

It looks a good investment, I admire your stance against overpriced Minors, therefore I look forward to purchasing it from you when you decide to sell Mike, as no doubt it will still be in great shape and just as much a bargain, especially when depreciation is taken in to account

Hi,
The main thing is to use some preservative to keep the wood in good condition and stop it rotting again. Varnish on it's own is not very good at protecting the wood for long, in fact I would read the other posts (links to some below) on here on wood preservation before you apply anything, in case having read them you decide to use something else.
Personally I'd look at other options to varnish and treat the wood before assembly (so as to get the preservative soaked into all the places that will later be sealed off) but it is your car, so you must decide.
As to colour, I think they were originally light in colour, some obsess about this going so far as to bleach their wood, others like the patternated look with a bit of grain showing and giving it character, I've seen one in a dark mahogany colour, I think that looked more like plastic wood (ugh!) but it's down to personal taste and what you are trying to achieve.
Good luck installing the frame however you choose to shade it.
Best wishes,
Mike.

I was the very first person to phone, and told the owner that the car was as good as sold and I wanted first offer on it.
I arrived the very next morning and purchased it.

Work carried out since collection Tuesday......
Timberwork stripped back to bare finish.
Rear doors removed.
Rear wing removed.
New timber foot plate fitted to nearside.
New beading fitted and wing replaced.
3 no small areas of metal fabrication and welding carried out.

Work continues Saturday.!!!
