sealant in roof gutters???

Post by Audrey1955 »

Hi,

on my 2 door minor, the roof 'gutters' either side of the roof has some sort of sealant in it that seems to have rusted. Any ideas on what sealant this is?

thanks

It isn't sealant it's the weld attaching the gutters to the roof. I'm not sure if they used lead for this.

I think they did use a sealant between the gutter and the roof, probably a weld through type,The gutter is spot welded on so they would need to seal the joint. Its often the case that the seal breaks down and water gets into the joint then rusts. Eventually if left long enough the gutter will rust away or worse the roof.Scrape it all out and get rid of as much of the rust as you can and treat the joint with any rust inhibitor of your choice. The sooner the better, then reseal the joint with mastic and repaint.

Yes

The original material was called Prestik ...sadly now no longer available. It was a coloured plastic putty material (see section r.19 of manual) A modern metal loaded filler would probably be suitable or a mastic as kennatt says above.

Any automotive seam sealer from car paint shop or motorfactors does it a treat. The profile in the guttering channel looks like it was applied by running a finger along to push it into the join. Which may be exactly how it was done on the production line... :)
Obviously avoid anything using silicone as it won't be overpaintable but if you get stuff from the motor trade for the motor trade you'll be fine.

Something like this, which can be overpainted.
