drain plug

at the carboot sale yesterday i bought a new drain tap £1.50..
mine just had the bolt..
when i removed said bolt nothing came out ?????
the hole is blocked with hard sludge !!!!!
what is the best way to remove the crap in the water ways?

Run a cooling system flush solution through the system for about 20 minutes, then undo the bolt when the engine is nice and hot. Make sure rad cap is off and careful not to burn yourself. The hot water and flushing solution should clear the sludge.

Don't worry about it - later engine didn't even have a plug. Drain cleaner for half an hour engine running - then drain and flush twice........

In addition many people use a screwdriver to scrape the stuff out.
