Problem Borg and Beck clutch

When trying to fit replacement clutch , noticed that retaining clips/springs holding release leavers tended to jump out - dont think this is as they should be - see pics. Anyone else had this problem ?

Hi Steve

I had exactly the same problem just over a year ago- I was doing a clutch job with a fellow club member and the springs popped out as we tried to line up the engine and gearbox. Two of the springs twisted badly and the other flew off and ended up in deep gravel. We had to use the springs from the factory fitted clutch from 1968 as we had to get the car back on the road that day. Fortuantely it was all fine.
It's (in my view) just another example of poor quality items using the original maker's name.

I can't tell for sure whether you've got them in properly; the first picture looks the best, but hopefully smeone else can confirm?

Fitted a Borg and beck clutch about a year ago, the pressure plate springs came loose and ruined the whole thing (whilst driving on dartmoor, not fun). I'd recommend keeping the old pressure plate.

would a small "pip" of weld on the levers hold the springs in place?

Thanks for all replies - reassuring that it was not just me! Decided to keep original in place as this was in better condition than we had previously thought - replaced pressure plate inside with a more one that was more 'heavy duty' and more like the original compared to that supplied with the B and B kit - all working well ! Very pleased to report that supplier ESN, replied promptly and offered full refund without question on return of product supplied.

What make of plate did you use? Did you manage to buy it on it's own as opposed to a kit?
My plate needs replacing and some of the new ones look a bit flimsy......

they are made in uk have Borg and Beck Etched on them and so far the manufacturer has had at least 20 returned all with similar problems, this happened to myelf and a friend, he had fortuantly met the manuafaturer at Beulie so we cut the middle man out hence us finding this out. a bit of metal will fall out this retains the correct distance for the spring movement..think a bad weld.
despite knowing all this they can appear ok its only when in the gearbox/engine that the first push on the clutch under tension and it goes bang!
think would avoid them in the future as getting fed up with having to do jobs twice due to new defective parts!

Modern B&B are Chinese which is why people are having so many problems with them.

this is not totally the case as far as I am aware they are made in the midlands some where. Brian Wood from the Dorset MMOC has met the guy who's company makes them for B and B!

Borg and Beck are part of the Firstline Group. If this is UK made (doubt it) then it's not a very good ambassador for British Industry, is it?

Perhaps the OP can tell us where it says it was made?

Pressure pad assemblies rarely go wrong - the standard 'advice' :roll: is to renew everything - big mistake - just fit a new friction plate and a new carbon thrust. Never known it to be a problem.
