A young member in need of Help

Help!There's something wrong with my car It cut out like 5-6 times ! It seemed to cut out when I was stationary? And as I was driving it seemed to be like jolting/spluttering at all speeds (20,30,40,50). It didn't cut out if I gave it revs or used the choke - but surely I shouldn't be doing this when I had been driving it for an hour?

hi sounds like fuel starvation,rather than electrical,have a look at the carb and see if the piston is free and easy with oil in the top,do you have a workshop manual?

Sounds like points gap to me - check this first......assuming of course you have enough fuel in the tank!

Standard things to check are points, condenser, and fuel (carb and pump). I would check the points and change if necessary, and change the condenser - both these are simple and cheap. Also check that the carb piston is free to move; and and that there is no dirt or water in the floar chamber - it's amazing what can be picked up at a filling station! Also check that the pump is delivering a good flow of fuel. Report back, and we'll take it from there.

Thanks for your replies! The other young members seem to think that its the condenser, my dad agrees with them. I am going to change the condenser and points anyway and see if this solves the problem. I also did fill up at morrisons with regular unleaded (havent filled up there before) maybe its just naff fuel??

Anyway, I will update you with the results

It wouldn't be the first time a petrol station has given 'naff fuel'. Luckily a Minor isn't very fussy in regards to contaminated fuel (when I was skint I stuck some known contaminated fuel in there - very smokey but fine otherwise). Go through the checks first, it won't do it any harm.

Could well be condenser - which damages the points. Hence suggestion to check points gap. It's a GOOD idea to carry a complete spare dizzy and just swop over when trouble hits.......

Hi all, replaced condenser, Points and dizzy cap and re-adjusted timing. It now runs better than it ever has !
