Help!Distributor, ignition timing/ indicators +trafficators

Hello everyone,

Can anyone help me find out why my distributor has change of position after engine rebuild ?

is the engine working? if so it has been retimed so don't worry
if it was a total rebuild ,you need to re time the engine from zero.Do you have a workshop manual?did you do the rebuild?

The distributor drive shaft has been put back in a different place. The bottom of the shaft is a helical gear that engages inside the engine, the top part as a keyway into which the distributor fits. The dizzy can fit only one way round, whereas the gear can engage on any of the teeth. It is relatively simple to extract the drive gear and put it back one tooth round. If you have the manual, it will tell you how. If not, and you want to do it, just ask.

I did the rebuild my self, new bearings ,pistons rings and a good clean.
the first time i try to start, it start backfiring and not starting.After checking everything 3 times i find out that i didn t put the distributor drive gear on timing.Done has it is in the workshop Manual.
I did that today , and then checked de ignition timing and that s when the distributor had to move forward.
Car started straight away and is runing alright,not sure what as changed.

I have done it like de worshop manual says, can you let me know how to do it, at this moment i can t refit the vacuum pipe.

As others have suggested - you need to move the drive shaft round anti-clockwise. Did you have the shaft out during the rebuild?? It's only a 5 minute job....

It looks like you are just about 90 degrees out. What if you were to move the dizzy anticlockwise by 90 degrees and reindex the wires.

Well spotted David! I hadn't noticed it has a different cap and leads - I suspect your idea is right!

What is the dizzy ? Is that the distributor or the drive gear ?

Short for 'distributor' which I for one can't be bothered typing every time!! So the idea is you slacken the clamp and turn the 'dizzy' 90 degrees anticlock, and then you move all the plug leads 90 degrees clockwise round the cap - and it will be pretty much perfect!

I take it from that statement that you have the workshop manual.

Correct Installation of the distributor drive spindle is explained on page AA.23, it is also shown in Fig. AA.20 on page AA.22.
You're going to have to remove the distributor, withdraw the drive spindle and rotate it anti-clockwise 1 or 2 teeth before re-installing it.

Just did it and is runing fine ,and the distributor is now in the good place.Thx Katy

Face the car towards a wall at night. Switch on the headlights. Now - start the engine and rev up - do the lights shine more brightly?? if noit sure - stop the engine - do they go dim?? With a DC voltmeter - should show 13.6/13.8 volts when revving up with headlights on and heater fan running.

The dynamo looks to be broken, can t get more than 12v off it.
I am from Holland.

Dynamo probably just needs new brushes. Inexpensive and easy to fit.
