wet plugs
As has been said, if the plugs are wet then either 'no spark' or 'spark
at the wrong time' are suggested, BUT have you checked that the
wetness is indeed petrol and not water? If you get water in the
float chamber the car will never start until you have removed all
traces of it. If you are still having no luck it would be worth taking
the cover off of the float chamber and soaking up the contents with
a rag or tissues and then filling it with petrol. Disconnect the wire
from the petrol pump and then try to start it. Of course this is a long
shot but it happened to me on a car which had stood outside for a
long time.

a bloke i spoke to asked me to ask you guys about the following sytoms as i metioned it to him.
on the two recent ocassions that it did start it ran very very rough indeed.
its appeared to be missfiring and not a simple missfire but a bad one that made the engine vibrate a great deal with alfull noise.
this bloke suggested that it sounded like to valve leaking together however, as it passed a compression test hes wondering if it could be sticking vavles?
any thoughs?
cheers sb

thanks alec i did all that you recomended today and all seemed fine. so ive gone back the electrical side, again!!Alec wrote:Hello SB,
S.U.'s are pretty basic, so you could have an ignition or mechanical problem. First is to ensure that the carburettor is set correctly, as you have been adjusting it. Take the piston\dashpot assembly off and set the jet flush, then back off 12 flats, switch on the ignition and ensure that you can see fuel near to the top of the jet. Just check that the piston and dashpot is clean and that the needle shoulder is flush with the lower face of the piston. Replace the piston\dashpot. If you lift the piston and release it you should hear a click as the piston falls back down.
If all that checks out then there is nothing seriously wrong with the carburettor.
If the car still won't start then I'd look at the ignition, or far less likely, a mechanical problem such as valves.

won't start
Re the violently vibrating engine when it does eventually start.
Have you fitted those new leads in the correct 1-3-4-2 firing order?
Trouble is that you have renewed a great many parts all at the same
time so it will be difficult to eliminate any particular wrongly fitted
item. If you turn on the ignition and flick open the points with an
insulated screwdriver do you get a spark there? Did you remove
the protective coating from the new points with petrol?.

Don't joke! I once got as far as holding a teabag above my toaster and was about to drop it in before my brain kicked in and went "NOOOOO! Tea bags in the mug, bread in the toaster!".i've just put my weekly food shop in the kettle althoug its rather difficault to shut the door
And most embaressingly, when I was *really* tired at work one day, in the middle of the ward tea-round I put coffee directly onto the saucer and only as I did it realised that I'd not put a cup in the way...... Still the patients found it funny....
