1955 back axel oil rings :(

Post by foofoournan »

I have a 1955 Morris minor, and there back axels don't have oil rings :( they just have the gaskets and the grease to try and hold the oil in! As I'm sure you know this doesn't work!!!
What can I do to try and improve the join between the axel and half shaft to stop the oil escaping?
I don't really want to up grade to a new axel, as I don't have the money or time!
However at the same time I don't enjoy having back brakes full of oil!!!
Thanks dave

Make sure the faces of the hub are nice and clean and assemble with a smear of instant gasket on each side to help keep it oil tight.

I would normally put a smear on even when its a later car that has the groove for the big O ring. Every little helps!

Well - grease is not going to do much good. But the paper gasket used to work well enough - although there is no doubt the O ring is better!! Are your bearings in good shape - and well worth checking if the breather on top of the final drive casing is not blocked with muck....and of course - don't overfill the EP90 oil!

On my 55 I just use the paper gasket with a smear of instant gasket each side, never had oil into drums since. But I never jack the car from the centre to take the wheels off,I lift one side so the oil runs the otherway, and do one side at a time. Once you take the wheel off there is very little pressure on the drive shaft flange, and oil can get past the seal. If you look at a genuine ser11 back plate you will see a little channel at the bottom edge,Was informed that it was built into the back plate so that any oil that got past the seal ran out of the system and not into the drum, don't know if this was true, but thats what I was told.
