4.5 J's

Post by 1098 »

What would you do ? I have five genuine van wheel rims. ESM are now selling the same wheels, 4.5J's,new and powder coated, with the added advantage, of the new rims having a safety bead. Not too sure what way to go on this one. Buying a new set from ESM, is the same price as having my genuine rims blasted and powder coated. :-?

My advice, sell the original van rims and use the cash to buy the ESM van rims, there are still people who value the original van rims. Having said that my 155 tubeless tyres have been on my standard rims for 10,000 miles now. It's up to you, I know what I'd do..

Powder coating is a much over rated pastime........... Just paint the van rims and use them.

Thanks Guys. it's the "safety rim" built into the new rims, that makes me think, the new rims are a bit better ??? :-?

It is the lack of beading and the fact you are trusting (presumably) unknown 40+ year old rims that would make me consider new rims.

Some fitters will not mount modern tubeless tyres to old rims for insurance and safety reasons.
Tubeless tyres can apparently part company with old rims under certain conditions.
I found this when I enquired locally for new tyres to be fitted to my old rims.
They advised me to obtain rims designed for modern tyres which I got from ESM so I now have peace of mind safe in the knowledge that my car has the safest wheels and tyres available. :D[frame]Image[/frame]

Thanks everyone. Doing a lot of Motorway journeys this year. I'll be buying ESM rims I think. Seems silly not to do.
Safety has to be the main consideration.
