Just seems to be a bit of an odd mixture to me, there may well be a very good explanation for that as it came out of a mm, however 1275 motors are going for silly money now and there is always a possibility that we may be buying a wrong un.bmcecosse wrote:It's much better with a rocker breather! It has an oil pressure switch fitted. And a take off in the head for a water sensor if wanted. Spridgets didn't have 'filter blocked' warning - and a Minor starter dog has been fitted - sadly without the essential crankshaft damper.. It will be a rough old 1275 without the damper.

Now that's sorted then what top speed do you think I should get? Obviously 1275engine, hif44 carb, type 9 5speed box, 4.22diff and 13" minilites

It really depends on what the bore size is, what cam is fitted and what spec the head is. With the engine in good condition and properly set up and with a standard bore, cam and head around a genuine (GPS mph) 85, maybe 90 on a flat road - at this speed the speedo is probably on its way to starting round for the second time, unless it has an 80mph face, it which case it will already be doing so!what top speed do you think I should get?
Bored out to 1380 + 276 cam + flowed big valve head gives around 105/110 (GPS), and easy cruising at 85/90 (GPS) in 5th + 3.9 diff all day long!

Went out and tried it earlier with my speed app on my phone (gps) and i got 65 with nothing left to go plus i was going down hill. it will do the same on the flat but needs a lot more room to get there. Its not that i want a higher top speed but if im nowhere near what i should be getting then there must be a problem somewhere. It doesnt bother me at the moment as i only do 10 miles at a time on a windy road, but im thinking about going down to cornwal at some point and the though of foot to the floor and topping 65 for an hour n half on the motorway doesnt fill me with joy, plus if something isnt right then that amount of time with the pedal planted is going to break something somewhere

Run it in 4th gear -how fast now??? And get a compression test done on the engine........

Before doing a compression test, I would check the tappet clearances. If they are closed up, the compression test will give a false result. Make sure the engine is nice and warm, plugs removed and the throttle wide open before doing the compression test.
After checking the tappets, then plugs, clean and gap, ignition timing and finally the mixture setting. How does it go now?

Well thats turned into a sunday job, not been able to get round to it today. As for speed in forth im looking at late 40's early 50's. seems to rev higher in third than 4th and 5th. I'll have a look at getting it all checked out, if i can find my feeler gauges that is.
