Rust treating product quality

Post by JOWETTJAVELIN »

I recently had to fork out on a new jar of stuff to treat rust, which makes it turn blue and neutralises it. It Cures rust.

But this new jar doesn't seem to be as effective as the old formula which you could brush on and forget about for ages. Now I have oxidised metal breaking through again in weeks! Can't get out to paint it properly either due to weather.

Have they been toying with the recipe which seems to be all the rage these days and can anybody recommend a product in its place?

Kurust - but all are based on phosphoric acid..... They must be covered over/sealed with paint.

And to do with everythig we dispose of going back into the water table. It's striking a balance I suppose.

Yep its easy to use, though I have only used on some small areas when I repaired a hole in my rear wheel arch and in the boot area, it did what it said on the bottle. The main thing that I liked about it was that being a non acid based product you can safely use it near paint without worring about stripping surounding areas plus it does not have the consistency of water so it does not run everywhere.

Many of these products seem to cover with a film but leave the rust there. Jenolite is hard to get now unfortunately. Being as it contains acid it can, with scraping and wire brushing, actually get back to clean steel but although there is no rust left, the metal thickness is reduced if the rust is severe. Cover or remove seems to be the choice.

Thanks for the link Richard but I notice it's in liquid form. The 'jelly' formula that holds itself in place is harder to find. The liquid is handy for dropping small items in.

Here's another one which I have used and found great for the job, before you over-paint make sure it completely cured: http://www.jawel.co.uk/index.php?main_p ... n0ffu5sgj3
Yes its sad isn’t it, all those fine products we used to use fast disappearing, Nitromors also, a shadow of its former self.

hi

kurust is not a bad product. i tend to use it a lot in the body shop. i always give it two good coats to be sure. there are lots of products out there though. most are much of the same to be truthful all acid based. kurust is good as you dont wash it of and can be primed over directly. as always good durable primer/and topcoat are the secret of protection

Hi, if you have a Serck cooler depot near you , nip in and ask if they have any Jenolite, it is as bmcecosse says they are all based on phospheric acid. It neutralises the ferrous oxide and turns it black but you must cover it up with primer once it has cured. :) :)

I've not known jenolite to turn rust black, treat the area several times and you can virtually get to clean metal. I think you are talking about the kurust family of products that simply convert a layer of rust and turn it black, underneath though, the rust is still there!

I still have almost a full jar but will only use it for specific jobs; I've gone to POR-15 and haven't looked back since.
