Re: 'Portable' Car Ports
I definitely think I'm leaning more towards a polytunnel type setup. You'd hope they are designed to withstand most weather conditions!

mmmm giving me second thoughts.... i currently use a stormforce cover and is very good but would prefer somthing that wasnt on the car fitted....ASL642 wrote:That's the only trouble with these "temporary garages" We used ours during the summer to do the rebuild but took it down whn we'd finished the car. I don't think most of them would withstand the recent weather we've had!
Re: 'Portable' Car Ports
Polytunnels are certainly available in a wider range of grades, and could well be a better bet. All such structures need somewhere to put them: do you have a big enough, level, area of suitable ground? Parking a car on grass or wet soil isn't good for it. Then there's rain. 15mm of rain in an hour isn't by any means exceptional, and that's 60 gallons over the area of a 6x3 polytunnel. Let's say it divides equally between the sides - 30 gallons of water each side. Where will it go, and what will stop it, and any other surface run-off, from running under the sides?
As I asked before, how will you secure it to the ground? It'll need more than four tentpegs and a breeze block. Are there any services (water, drains, gas, phone, electricity cable) that you might hit with a long stake?
If you have close neighbours, a word beforehand might be a good idea. They might not be able to stop you putting it up, but they could make life miserable for you if they don't like it.
Plenty to think about.

Re: 'Portable' Car Ports
If I am still without a proper garage next winter I was considering using both...
Thanks Kevin....I have an area of hard standing where a garage used to be (old asbestos garage demolished before I bought my cottage in 2000), in a very sheltered garden with plenty of anchor points. Neighbour is no problem as I live in the village I grew up in and she's part of the family!
It definitely needs plenty of thought....I may have to consult Dad!

well....Thanks Kevin....I have an area of hard standing where a garage used to be (old asbestos garage demolished before I bought my cottage in 2000),
The planning rules changed a couple of years ago and now you can build on up to 50% of your garden space without planning consent as long as it is >5m from the house (height restrictions etc.. apply).
If it was me I'd be researching sectional garages - they can be much more pleasant that the old fashioned concrete slab and asbestos roof versions of old.
Faced with a good budget, you can do it brick & interior blockwork etc.. but the car doesn't really know the difference between twin skin hand built walls and pretend-brick prefab. For an extra few hundred quid, either can be insulated to make winter tinkering more pleasant.

Re: 'Portable' Car Ports
I would have thought condensation would be reduced by keeping a gap at the front and rear for air circulation, as per a car port.

Re: 'Portable' Car Ports
.....and I've used one as a car port with both front and back zipped down to top of car bonnet/boot there's plenty of ventilation around car, and on hotter days they have side vents (like tents) which can be rolled up.
They are also very useful as temporary spray booths - we used ours in the back garden to spray wings, boot and bonnet and anything else we could unbolt from the car.

Re: 'Portable' Car Ports
I want either the portable garage or a poly tunnel... still thinking what would look best in the front garden and most secure and safe and one that will not suffer with too much damp, moisture inside...

Same as that - I'm leaning towards the poly tunnel idea.....PaulTubby wrote:I want either the portable garage or a poly tunnel... still thinking what would look best in the front garden and most secure and safe and one that will not suffer with too much damp, moisture inside...
Re: 'Portable' Car Ports
In my poly tunnel the side and back of the tunnel has about 6"of the cover that's longer you dig a trench and put the sides and back in the hole and back fill you will not get the water running in then I do get some condensation but not much if you leave the vents open and it tens to run down the sides not on the car my tunnel is 6m x3m and Is by far stronger then any gazebo or car port I have ever had I live in the countryside so lots of wind and they are all sill standing I had on gazebo that lasted two nights
Mike
