Hi,
The other day, after running perfectly well a couple of hours earlier my car decided it wouldn't run, what I mean by that is she started on choke, running very unevenly and when I pushed the choke in she died. I thought this strange as she drove perfectly well at lunch time.
Anyway after some head scratching and general fiddling I settled on it being a vacuum problem.
Apart from the distributor pipe I have two take offs from my inlet manifold, one for the brake servo and one for the existing anti run on valve.
I reasoned that it wouldn't fire at all if it was a distributor problem, which left the brake servo and the anti run on valve.
I was hoping that it wouldn't be the brake servo but I could hear the anti run on valve closing and opening when I switched the ignition on and off...............
I decided to remove the rubber hose and cap of each manifold outlet one at a time in turn to see if this would cure the problem........
Loh and behold, when I removed the anti run on valves hose and capped the outlet on the manifold, she ran fine!
But I could hear it opening and closing.................
Time to remove it and inspect the offending item more closely, which is when I found this:
[frame][/frame] As you can see, the stem which operates the valve is still in place in the centre but you wouldn't normally be able to see into the body like this, as the only other thing you should see is the white plastic of the valve which seals it, which is completely missing!?!
This was purchased from a well known Triumph spares specialist, as a replacement for another of the same design which had ceased to operate, not that long ago. So once the receipt is dug out we will be having a little chat.
But what I've really come on here to ask is if anybody can recommend a decent, long lasting anti run on valve and where to purchase it.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Mike.

Running on is generally caused by something being wrong. An anti-run-on valve will just mask that problem!
I believe, running on can be caused by all sorts. Idle too fast, mixture too rich, timing too... something! Or just a very carbon-ey combustion chamber (carbon glowing red from heat acting as a spark plug).
Funnily enough I gave her a good de-coke when I replaced the head gasket no long ago.
The anti run on valve stems from the days when she still had her 1098 fitted and that was very overdue for a rebuild, plus the fact that I'd heard from others that the 'A' series always suffered from run on.
Are the mini 1275 ones any good?

The MG Metro had one fitted as standard, and I think some specs of later MGB's. I have an MG Metro one fitted to our 1380, as when I bought the engine, even after a complete rebuild it occasionally ran on. It failed after about 10/12 years, and I ran without it for a while with no real problems, but as a precaution fitted a new one about 9 months ago.
With a standard (ish) engine I would not have thought it should be necessary, as it could, as others have said, mask a problem that should have a different solution.
The Metro valves come up on eBay quite regularly, but at widely ranging prices. £15/20 should, eventually, get you a good or even a new one.
It now begs the question,Is it now running on after you have taken the thing off
I think it will take me a while to source another anyway, so she is running without one at present...................so far so good................
