What does my insurance cover?

Post by MattJR »

There is another thread on here about insurance, but I am starting a new one as my query is on a slightly different point. The other thread suggests that we should all be careful about using our Minors as a main car if we do not have another modern main car. Apparently, classic car insurance is meant to cover occasional use.

I have a modern car insured by Admiral and when I bought my Minor last year, I turned it into a two-car policy. The extra cost of the Minor was pretty cheap, about £120 per year. My policy says I can use the Minor for social, domestic, pleasure and travel from and to my main place of work. So long as I use my Minor only to go to my usual office every day (and don't use it for driving to other places to do with work) then I can use the car every day.

Does anyone have a view on whether I am right? As I say, I don't have a classic car policy, just a normal two-car policy. I didn't think Admiral would insure the Minor, but they were happy to and, incidentally, I find they are a good insurer (just a personal opinion, not an advert and I don't work for them!)

Thanks, Matt

It would seem that if you have a "normal" policy you are treated as a "normal " driver as explained in your policy and without that particular classic catch that some polices have.

When I worked as a teacher I used to ,with some insurance firms, to have an extra paragraph added to include using my car for work ,(taking kids home etc),some charged, some added it for free .

You may be able to do the same

Generally the 'classic' insurers ask if you have a regular car - and of course you are expected to answer truthfully. My RH Insurance policy covers me for work (and I do wonder if volunteering is 'considered to be 'work' - I certainly come home knackered..) - and the usual social/domestic etc. It cost considerably less than £120 - and it INCLUDES roadside assistance and recovery if required. I doubt Admiral do that for you!
