You are a very brave man sir - my hat is off to you but a really good article and very well written. I only came across the article when visiting a friends house a couple of weeks ago. We had a good discussion about it and whether either of us would have braved it. Needless to say we wouldn't but we did raise our pints to you

Re: Engine size
I saw this : http://www.mgcars.org.uk/news/news498.html
The engine code prefix '8G' looks like it could be a 850cc, as used by the GPO. Look for Austin A35 van in the list.

Re: Engine size
Aye - but confusingly 8G was also used for gold seal engines - like this one........ It would take seconds to pull the rocker cover off and tell us the casting number on the cylinder head!!!!

Re: Engine size
It is on the opposite side to the valves, in the centre. You'll need a light wire brush/cloth to find it. If a 1098, then it should be a 12G202 I think.
Re: Engine size
Chesney,BMCecosse.Brucek,Daveyl. Many thanks for your help.As the not, so ultra reliable, 460 Swedish Scania let it's self down again. And a wrecker got me home, fours hours early,
I whipped the rocker box cover off,and stamped into the head IS the number 12G202. As I have a gold seal engine and box,for £50.00, it looks like it was a good days work. The late owner worked for British Telecom/Post office Telephones. Also thrown in the sale was a late NOS, still in primer, LCV Bonnett. Still has the BL Sticker on it. I also got a Lucas Electric screen wash bottle. I assume Post Office telephones, gave up rebuilding engines them selves, and bought off the shelf replacments towards the end ?? Any way, I now know the size of the engine. Many thanks for your help everyone.

Re: Engine size
Thanks, BMC. Looking forward to Dan Snows, history of the railways tonight.
Re: Engine size
Yes, but pretty good, is what I thought. The final episode, full of info, and historical fact. It just lacked, for me, a liitle bite. Still, all kinds of things, on TV, related to railways at the moment.bmcecosse wrote:And it was pretty good !
Would love to see .. perpeptual Motion, re the Morris Minor once again. Most of it ( if not all ? ) can be viewed on You Tube.
Forgive spelling, can't find spell check on here.
