Hazard lights are mandatory over here-independant of the age of the vehicle.

Yes it's not the best way of fitting hazard lights but it was free unlike the ridiculously priced kits you find.
It can be removed in a couple of minutes and makes breaking down on an unlit road far less dangerous which is really the only reason I wanted to fit them.

I am led to believe it aint strictly legal, but I have been known to use the hazards to keep the car behind me on his toes when I see stationary traffic ahead, it tends to wake people up, preventing them rear ending me on the motorways.

Many modern cars have deccelerometers that trigger the hazard lights under heavy braking, for just such an occasion as to alert other road users to a sudden halting of traffic. Can't be that illegal!

it is legal a lot of modern cars when the brakes are applied hard they automatically flash there hazards as a warning

Other option of course is to put a flasher unit with switch into the brake light circuit - so they can be left flashing in an emergency.

It is in the driving theory test these days. They say if you notice traffic slowing down sharply, use your hazard warning lights to warn traffic behind you. so it's definitely legal and really should be done by all road users (who have proper hazard lights of course )
