radiator reconditioning parts

Post by paul42mill »

Hi Chaps.
Does anyone know of a company that can supply the components to recondition your rad yourself, i.e. veins and cooling fins that make up the core.
I have cleaned and repaired my upper and lower tanks, just need to make up a new core.
The materials dont seem to be very complex, just tinned oval tubing and the fins come in strips between the veins.

I would be tempted to take it to your local rad recorrer.
Its not too expensive.

Hi

Most rad recorers will supply you with a core to do yourself, they need your old core to get the correct dimensions and usually supply with the header plates soldered on. I recored my old MG Magnette rad this way but to be honest it would have been about the same cost to have them do it....I just felt the need to do it myself !!!

I would think it would take some doing cos each vane is soldered top and bottom to the base of the tanks and the fins are soldered to the vanes,it would take an age to do and a great deal of skill .Once you had soldered one vane in as soon as you do the one next to it ,the solder from the first would simple run out of the joint. Thats assuming that you could buy the vanes and fins separately which I doubt.Everything is possible but!!!!!!!!!!. ,The question is why bother ,the extra cost of them soldering the core to your tanks would be a very low % of the cost of the whole rebuild by them.

Well BM if you have a spare couple of weeks you could always get loads of coils of cabling of different colours and a big roll of black tape and make up your own wiring harness, that would keep you going ,and if you kept a list of all the different lengths, you could put it on a sticky so we all could do the same. :D :D

For an earlier car than a Minor but QI

Most recore radiator videos suggest that it really need gas welding gear.

I DID make a complete new special wiring harness for a Rally Mini many moons ago. We used red cable - with wire numbers on the ends, and black for earths. The harness was designed to separate all the lighting circuits away from everything else - with individual fuses for each main light. It worked well!
