the stronger spring will not sort out your adjustment problem, all it will do is pull the pedal back, pull it back by hand, and as previously posted ,hold the rod or someone hold the pedal inside the car so it can't move and from under the car ,push the clutch lever backwards untill you can't move it any further, then tell us how much of the rod is showing to the front of the lever where it passes through the hole in the bottom of the lever.

Absolutely ^^^ this is the key to the problem.

Sorry I've not been on the case with this problem but have now fitted a stronger spring, however no matter what I do with the clutch adjustment the pedal doesnt disengage the clutch, even with my foot to the floor the car still moves forward,or backwards though it will go into and out of 1st and reverse, I'm properly puzzled, I'm going to attempt to adjust the clutch on my Traveller, when I get a battery charger so it will run, and see if it may be that the pedal bar is adrift from the chassis leg therefore unable to operate the clutch on Trundle, our saloon. 1 car running would be good just at the minute as the modern needs attention beyond my capabilities and needs to go to the mechanics so we could do with 1 of our 2 Moggies running!

Some of the repro relay shaft assemblies ( item 55 here http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewP ... exID=17074) (and before I get picked up on it - I'm not suggestion the MOSS one is likely to be faulty) have been known to be very poorly welded - and this may have failed. You would need to take down the mechanism to check. Or- lie under (take great care!) while someone else operates the clutch.....
Meantime -surely a battery swop will get your Trav working??? You can then drive to Maplins and buy 2 X Solar Chargers to keep the batteries up!!

I know a Battery swap (or indeed Starting Handle, from another post) will start my Traveller, but that leads to further issues which are best not gone into at the moment. I need to suss which Moggie is the quickest to get running and transfer over bits in the short term.

It would seem a clutch problem is most likely, an old boy mechanic had a look tonight, it was dark though, and he thinks that if the clutch is at the end of its adjustment rod ( it is, all but a few turns) then the Thrust bearing? or summat like it has worn out and replacement of the whole clutch is probably needed. I am going to call in a favour from someone who I know has worked on old British vehicles in the past and hope its fixable as replacing the clutch is beyond me at the moment, money and timewise.

You can shine a torch in one of the holes in the bell housing and look in the other to see the carbon thrust. Even if worn - you should still get it to work - maybe just a bit noisy. Have a look and report back what you see...

If you are desperate to get it going, undo the nut and put a spacer on the rod to give more adjustment,a larger nut or lots of washers. A bodge but one that many do .untill you can get a proper look at it with the engine out.It is possible that a different rod has been fitted at some time because the rod breaking is a common fault,Any chance of a photo of the mechanism.

thank you Kennat, I will try that this afternoon. Trundle, our Saloon moves, its just in gear, with the clutch depressed it STILL moves, so I know we have a clutch drive, just not full disengagement when the pedal is depressed, though it will go into 1st & then 2nd without crunching so may be a bodge is possible.

the bodge may last for 10 years :D as long as it goes into gear and disengages without any nasty crunching or clattering then just forget about it untill you decide if you are going to investigate further. You could always call it an engineering modification rather than a bodge :D :D

If the clutch doesn't fully release you'll wear out the carbon thrust in no time.

True there does still need to be free play.
However the "engineering solution" is generally to compensate for wear in the many moving parts.

There must be acres of 'free play' at the moment. Did we ever get any feedback on the relay shaft /levers - has the welding been checked?

No joy so far, Trundle is back up on blocks and only being looked at sporadically. However from a cursory glance whilst my son pushed and pulled the Clutch pedal there is no action at the clutch end, though the gearbox looked to be moving slightly as the pedal was depressed, but this force made no movement at the clutch, and yes there is freeplay to the floor on the pedal! :o

Well -you need to look where the movement is going.. sure you haven't wound the adjustment the wrong way????? Otherwise - study the relay shaft/levers etc - see the 'onion' thread!!
