Cuts out when pulling away

Post by Trickydicky »

Hi Chaps,

Took her out for a run today, she hasn`t been out since mid november when we had a flawless run up to Whitby and back anyway, today she started first time went out and the problem appeared where when you pull away in either 1st or 2nd the revs die. When you are running along at 30/40mph no problems, just when you pull away. The fuel pump sounds to be ok as you can hear it ticking nicely. At one point she died and would not start at a set of traffic lights so had to push her round the corner, when after a quick check under the bonnet she started but the same symptoms happened all the way home, keeping the revs up seemed to help.

Checked the plugs and they were a healthy straw colour, as the manifold was still hot I did not want to check the float chamber for crud in case of spillages, but will do that tomorrow. I am thinking fuel starvation due to crud as I had to put a couple of gallons in today due to her needing some as she was nearly empty. After reading some other posts though some suggest it could be a failed condensor.

Also thank goodness to the solar trickle charger keeping the battery topped up as I had to crank the engine a fair bit when she would not start :D (Top tip Roy!!)

Cleaned the points and regapped them as they felt a tad tight on 015", replaced the condensor took it for a good run and all seems ok :)

Cheers Roy.

Went out for a run today and guess what, the running problems reared its head again. Broke down in the underpass of the runway at Leeds/Bradford airport, jeez those planes are loud when they take off :o .

Managed to limp near home but had to tow the last mile. Checked the plugs and no spark,12v at the coil, took out the king lead and a healthy spark against the head. Checked the gap on the points and all good. So all it could be is either the dizzy cap or the rotor arm.
So again my Morris Minor survival kit came to the rescue, changed the rotor arm and presto first pull of the starter and away she went :D

Again the solar charger paid off as the battery coped well with numerous attempts at starting.

Happy days :D

Thanks for that Jack. Appreiciate the offer of help.

Yep Roy the old rotor arm is in the bin and I have ordered a replacement and will swop them over. (Ordered a kit with Points,Condensor,LT lead and Dizzy cap)

Really had to get her running again today as even though I had managed to tow her home I couldnt get her back in the garage as my drive is so steep theres no way I could have expected the wife to push her up into the garage
