Last of the Cowley travellers

Post by Romek »

Hi wise ones,
I've just checked my maroon travellers no. which is 1257408m. On doing a little research it seems she was one of the last to be made at Cowley. Apologies in advance for the daft question but in practical terms what does this mean? I'm within 17 cars of the last, anyone get closer?

If it's the one in your sig pic, then it means that you need a new front panel 8)

Hi

For some reason British Leyland switched production to Adderley Park in Birmingham which was the plant where commercial vehicles were built. No doubt someone else will come up with exact reasons, but I suspect it may have been to do with the takeover in 1968 of BMC and also that the rear body was built in Coventry and shipped down to Cowley to be fitted to the chassis and therefore it may have been a cost saving exercise.
My Traveller is a late H reg (May '70) and was definitely built at Adderley Park. The chassis no ends with an 'F' rather than 'M'. If you're interested, you should be able to obtain the factory production details from the BMIHT at the Gaydon Museum in Warwickshire, but all the factory records for Adderley Park were destroyed when the plant closed.
