Weight of the Engine.
Can anyone tell me how heavy the engine is ? I want to buy a chain hook to attach to a steal joist/rafter to lift the engine out of a scrap car and need to know which one is suitable for the job.

1098 engine is about 250 lbs, gearbox about 45lbs - best to get a chain that can do both together

Is that the best way to do it ? Ie. Remove engine and gearbox together in one go rather that seperately ?
Been trying to find a link to removal of both apart from the Hayes manual. I have a scrap moggie I'm trying to take apart. Most of the engine components are gone from the engine already, in particular the radiator and hoses, so its just the petrol line and a few ancillaries to move. I think its held on with four bolts, is that right ? Remove those and the gearbox member and it should come up ???

If you are taking both then yes I would pull the whole lump out.
Engine is secured via the front engine mounts and the steady bar under the battery tray. There are 4 bolts for each tower or two per engine mount. Easiest to take the towers too. Gearbox via the gearbox X member which is 4 bolts into the chassis and easiest to take this with you too. Don't forget to remove any remaining attachments to the clutch linkage and the earth strap on the gearbox x member if it has one.

With head/dynamo etc removed - the engine can be lifted out by hand. Indeed, even easier - remove the front panels - block under the sump with wood - then wiggle the engine forward onto the front cross member and out. Just drop the gearbox down under the car. If you must have a hoist then 200Kg is more than enough. I bought one in Canada a few years ago for 3 $..it works well!
