About Fuel Pump typs

Post by Sandun »

Hi - I have seen 2 type fuel pump - one of them 2 points , other one 1 point -
so , I want to know what is the difference of them -
my car have a 2 point pump , if i set to the car 1 point pump , will it work well ?
and i tell me, i have seen some fuel pump has a big Resister near the point set -
what is this ? for what ? is the pump work without the Resister ?
My main problem is 2 point pump work as a 1point pump ( is the car work from 1 point pump? )

The pump is the same basic unit. Originally the points had one set of contacts, but the double set of contacts was introduced as being more reliable - it spreads the switching load between the two contact points, and so (at least in theory) reduces wear. Either type will work perfectly on your car.

I doubt it's a resistor. It's either a condenser or a diode. It's function is the same as the condenser in the distributor. It cuts down the sparking at the points when they open and close.
If you use a condenser, I believe it can go in either direction. If you use a diode, they are specific as to direction.
I believe that you can run without either, but expect to burn through points very quickly.

The condenser is item 69 on this page.

I hope you realize that the condenser in my picture is burned up. Good ones don't look like that.
If you are handy with a soldering iron, you can find a condenser in an old radio or other electronic device and fabricate one for your pump.

Although it's true that petrol would come out there I've never seen it actually happen.
The diaphragm gets hard and useless before it actually breaks in practice.

No capacitor fitted on manufacture, so no need, unless your radio has some interference in which case it may help but generally its picked up from the supply, put a choke in, or bad earthing to the aerial and/or both.
Should be ready for tea time.
