how to work machinical fuel pump

can you tell me how to work machinical fuel pump of morris - i have not seen - pz give me a pic and tell how it works

out of interest can you swop to a mechanical pump for a 1098? if so which other BMC ones fit?

Minors weren't fitted with mechanical fuel pumps as standard, they were electric, so I can't suggest one, sorry.

Only the Austin 803/948 engines had a place for a mechanical pump as standard... But it would be possible to fit one to a 1098 - although a hole would need to be made in the block wall at just the right place - and two holes drilled and tapped.... Just stick with the electrical pump Sandun!! I'm sure I guided you to a Workshop Manual many moons ago???

Some 1098 engines have the appropriate hole and studs with a blanking plate fitted but as above, electric pump best option.

Hmmm - many certainly have a single stud fitted as an anchor for the breather pipe when it points down - and using that as a location it would be simple to mark off the necessary hole and second stud location. Certainly all camshafts (except the full race 648 and all injection Mini cams... ) have the fuel pump lobe available.

Yes - come to think of it -they did! So I guess all Austin blocks have the opening.

I flitted a mechanical pump to my 948 engine and liked it. I bought a "Classic Mini" pump. BE SURE to include the spacer between the pump and crankcase.
The reason I discontinued the electric pump is that the gas (petrol) in the US has 15% ethanol which was eating up the rubber seals in the electric pump valving.
Do you have that problem in the UK?

The problem is coming - we do have some ethanol - good idea I think! Mech pump works fine - and no 'vapour' problem in hot weather because the pump is low mounted.

First off, I don't have the "standard" SU pump for the Morris Minor.
Mine Morris arrived with a different model SU pump. The kind with the plastic domes that can rotate around for line alignment.
These rubbers go in the domes between the dome and the valves. A third rubber goes into the inlet for the screen. These were in place for about a month!
If I knew how to photoshop, I would have removed the hair.

That looks more like a Mini pump - designed to be fitted low down below the tank and so has a flooded suction. Not very good at 'sucking'. Anyway - you have solved the two problems very nicely with a mechanical pump. Perhaps Sandun would appreciate a picture of that in place if you could take one??

Excellent - on the Mini the lines run a LOT closer than that and they never have the slightest trouble. How's that Sandun - does it answer your question????

On some, notably those fitted to the B Series engined Austin Somerset, there was a little rod to pull so you could prime the pump if the car had been standing for a time. I wonder if they could be fitted? The glass bowl of some is also helpful.

I'm a bit late confirming this but the Austin version of the commercial minors have this opening, assuming the original engine is still fitted.

That's a very recent Mini style pump - but pretty much ALL mechanical pumps will fit. The thickness of the spacer decides just how hard the pump will pump.... And yes - on early versions there was a priming lever which was quite handy if the car has been standing for some time. When I start my TR7 after a long 'rest' I just squirt some fuel directly into the carbs and off it goes.
