Respray costs

Post by JulieAnne »

Well it is that time of year again and before I ask my question I would like to wish everyone a great Christmas and a fantastic new year. What I wang help on is the cost of a bare metal respray and the best place to go. I know it will depend on what needs to be done I just need a ball park figure. my minor (Shirley) is 1970 1000, she has a small rust spot on the hood an a few more serious bits on the doors, but apart from that is not too bad. Any advice?? Julie Anne.

No need for a full bare metal respray if existing paint is sound. Localised repairs will obviously be required on any poor areas. Preparation is the costly part and price depends on what level you require - eg all panels removed and sprayed separately then reassembled. I'd suggest around £4k if a full on job, or up to £2k for a decent job.

The problem is what will be revealed when the car is taken back to 'bare metal'...and how much work is required to put it right. Is the car completely sound underneath?? That's where it REALLY matters. Survey the car carefully before going for a full respray. I agree with Pete - if the car is ok - a gentle respray on top of what's there now is probably best.

There are paint jobs and there's knacker lacquer .It's 90% in the prep ,I suggest you look at other work they have done: look at the prep before they spray, paying particular attention to the keying and the type and quality of the paint being planned, good luck

:D Thanks for all the advice I will take it on board and look to see where the best place is. Shirley lives in SE London on the borders of Kent. She does not mind where she goes to get a respray, does it need to be a Minor specialist? Or could I use a reputable generalist? Shirley does not need new panels and from what we can see and have been advised only one major bit round the passenger door hinges and a couple of rust spots elsewhere. Has anyone used the place in bath?
Cheers peeps. X

It doesn't have to be Minor specific for a respray, but you are far better going on recommendations as they'll all say they do a good job.
