2 Vs 4

Hi Folks,

Finally got around to putting the new water pump and hoses on last weekend, went ok no probs. I was just wondering, knowing that Moggies are generally overcooled is it possible to run with just 2 fanblades instead of the factory 4?

I also put a 88 deg thermostat in.......great what an improvement. I'd wholeheartedly recommend it.

At the moment I have around a 1/4 of the rad blocked off. Is everyone else blocking off a simillar amount? I do a round trip of 60 miles everday in all types of traffic without any probs.

The amount you blank off will depend on the type of driving and the mileage covered for instance if you only had a ten minute journey you could probably blank the whole lot off, trial and error will give you the best results although it sounds like you have already hit on a happy medium.

If it's a '68 then it should only have 2 fan blades anyway.......... sounds like someone has added an extra set of blades.

In the winter I used to block off about 3/4 of my radiator with tin-foil wrapped round the grille, but I had the standard thermostat fitted.

When you are using the correct TWO blade fan you may find that
you have to remove the 88degree thermostat When the warmer
weather returns.

Hi Guys,

I'm fairly certain the car came from the factory with 4 blades.

The Moggies were assembled over here by a firm called Brittains Ltd, who assembled the cars from 'completely knocked down' kits.

This done to avoid the extortionately high taxes placed on new car imports by numerous Governments (No change there then!)

I wonder if the 4 blade fan was a standard on these 'export' cars? (Mind you I can't see Irish summer temperatures causing any probs!)

There were also a number of 'manufacturers' who assembled vehicles. Austin, Commer, Volkswagen, Bedford and Fiat all had agents here in Dublin who assembled vehicles.

Until the mid-80's Ford still manufactured in Cork city.

I always wondered about the 4 blades. I've not yet come across a simillar car to check it out yet.

Do you reckon they used the CKD cars to get rid of components that have sat for a while in the factory?

Dublin, tropical?? Not usually, mind you it is warmer than my home town of Walsall (just north of Brum). We hardly get any snow and we don't seem to get the hard frosts we have at home. Mind you, i've only been here for 4 years so maybe it s just luck.

Guiness is a great anti-freeze. I've not felt the cold at all (hmm, must be the insulating layer)

Dublin, tropical?

Well, it does have a centre for tropical diseases. I've got a photo taken outside it somewhere
