Return springs on rear brake shoes.....?

Hello I have had a look in the workshop manual I have and it does not mention it,
but which spring goes closest to the brake cylinder,
the thicker full length spring or the thinner partially sprung spring?

It's the thinner partially sprung spring, putting the springs on the back of the shoes works best from memory.

Thanks Mike and Marky for your reply's.

I have gone out to my shed tonight to swap the springs around, but there was no clearance ton the rear one to do so. It fouled the baking plate.

Then I thought I would have a look at the picture Mike refered to, and to my surprise one of the springs are differant to the
one in the brake drum.

And here is a close up of the two springs.

As you can see one of the springs is different to listed in the book.

Also of note the front brakes carry the same springs.

I think that I have those springs in my brakes. The short spring just holds the shoes together and the long spring has to compress the piston.
You have the wrong brake shoes in that photo. Only one shoe should have the cutout to fit the adjuster, those are front brake shoes.

That's what matters at the end of the day.
As has been said, the hubs don't need to be removed for this job.

The hub is part of the brake drum on the sidevalve, held on the big splines and then a nut and split pin.

Mike in the workshop manual diagram, bothshoes do have the adjuster recess,
its just that they are both placed on the slave cylinder side on the diagram.

Those springs that I have seem to be alot tougher than the others,
this I assume would lead to a more opositive return of the shoes,
but I imagine a harder pedal.

I am going on a test run this evening so I am sure they work fine but I will advise.

If you reverse the top shoe as per the workshop manual the angle of the spring will change and it will be closer to the cylinder as the holes look to be in different positions on the shoe and then it may not foul on the back plate????

Despite what the workshop manual says, there should definately be only one shoe with a recess on the back brakes, the boxes should have different part numbers and the shoes should be the same for all the Minor back brakes.
Check that the other side has the same shoes and if you have not fitted the fronts then check that all the front shoes have adjuster recesses, just in case they are in the wrong boxes
