Static Timing

Post by wanderinstar »

I have just been doing some work on Lucy.New [to me] rocker shaft and rockers, adjusted tappets, cleaned and adjusted plug gaps, reset points and reset timing. This is where problems started, timing set to 3degrees b.t.d.c. as per manual. Tried to start, no joy at all. Turned dizzie anticlockwise about 20 degrees back to roughly where it was originally, so that the vacuum unit is now nearly vertical.
Is it normal for timing to be so far out from original settings?

timing

I think you will find that the usual dizzy position is with the vacuum
unit near vertical. Since the rotor arm rotates in an anti-clockwise
direction you RETARDED the ignition when you rotated the dizzy
anti clockwise so I assume you had set it too far advanced to start
with. (That's assuming that it started after you moved it)

How did you check the timing ? in the 1st place as a 20 degree movement is a fair bit.

When you set the timing were you doing it at the point where the contact breakers were just breaking (correct) or just making (incorrect)?

Normally you rotate the distributor anticlockwise until the vacuum unit has gone past the vertical position when the contacts should be closed. You then turn it clockwise until they are just breaking.
