What counts as a 'stroke' of a grease gun?

Hi all,

I've been meaning to go 'round the our Minor giving all the grease points a go for a while but have only just got to the point of actually doing it (and therefore looking to buy a gun) and have realised that there's one fairly important thing I don't know (see above).

I've seen grease guns that do anything between 0.4cc and 1.2cc in a stroke advertised, but I don't know where in this range the factory-recommended 'standard' stroke falls. I can't find any reference to it in the workshop manual and rather suspect it's just something you 'know' if you're more experienced than me. Everything I can find just talks about how many strokes to give each point - nothing about what one actually is objectively.

I know some of the rubber boots can split if you over-do it, so I'm keen to make sure I know what I'm doing as much as possible before I begin.

Can anyone enlighten me?

I think you are probably giving it too much thought.

Basically for things like the prop shaft, just keep going until you see grease coming from somewhere and wipe it off, if its dirty grease, wait until fresh clean comes out.
Hand Brake cable, again keep going until you see some seeping from somewhere.
Trunnions, I'm pretty certain one of the boots will ooze first. Just give it a wipe.
Ball joints - wait until the boot expands.

Just pump away..... and 10 strokes for the steering rack - 5 with wheel full to the left and another 5 with wheel full to the right.

I was taught to keep pumping till clean grease appears, on the ones that ooze, not the rack!
