I see that Smiths industries pulled out of auto instruments some time back in the 80s I believe. Who makes speedometers today? I would think they are just display units now, fed from a computer which processes info from a sensor somewhere on the final drive or road wheels. Just interested really.

Each wheel has a speed sensor which feeds its readings on the CAN bus* to the central computer which then outputs to the screen in front of you.
