Engine Mounts
Apologies, as this post refers to my other car, not my Morrie but I guess the principle could apply to Morries as well! I have a 1963 EJ Holden, Australian 6 cylinder which has four engine mounts, 2 front and 2 rear. Just replaced all four and now find quite a bit of vibration, whereas before there was none. I fitted each mount firmly before moving onto the next one - should I have left all 4 loose and tightened equally in sequence?

Assuming the new mounts were correct and matched the old ones you took off.....have they been installed the right way up ?
Are all four mounts the same or are front and rear different ? Fitted with an incorrect swop i.e fronts fitted to rear and vice versa ? I'm not familiar with the car but with some mounts they can look symetrical but in fact not i.e you can inadvertantly install them upside down.
I'd jack up the engine with a wooden block under the sump, to take the weight off the mounts, having slackened the nuts off.
Release the jack and let the engine settle and then retighten finger tight.Gently rock the engine by hand, to make sure it is properly settled and then tighten right up.
Is there any engine steady bar fitted to the engine, with perished rubbers ? Ditto ...how about the gearbox mounts , do they impact on the engine movement significantly ?

All the mounts are correctly fitted and correct for the car - there is no gearbox mount, the rear ones are at the front of the box.. When fitting I had the first three fully tight and then had to lever the final rear one across a little to line it up, so it was very rigid. It strikes me that if all four were loose, and I ran the engine for a few minutes then tightened them up evenly it might help things?

Not "too loose" .....it might move too far left or right and break something.

Agree that you should have all slightly slack and allow engine to settle before doing up tight - I would go diagonally and a bit at a time, rather like fitting a clutch. A while ago I did fit new mounts to one of the Minors only to find terrible vibration. Swapping back to the old mounts cured the problem; and there was a thread running a few months ago where we discussed the problem that new materials do not always match the correct specification, so you might want to refer the problem to your supplier. The problem about new parts not matching old comes up time and time again, but I am thinking of an issue spoecifically with mounts having a different rubber.

That's right, the rubber seems much harder so there is a quality issue with repro engine mounts.

I replaced the 4 mounts in my Minor 1000 with brand new ones. I have put the old ones back in as I had quite a bit of vibration and harshness coming into the body. Since reinstalling the old ones thew harshness has gone. The rubber on the new ones was very hard so dont think the rubber had any flex in it and its as you say the repro ones arent as good.
