Something Just Doesnt Add Up.....

Post by PhilR »

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1969-AUSTIN-M ... 337d9e4b51

Maybe just me but something doesn't add up about this!! I wonder if anyone knows of this pick-up? The same seller was advertising a Bristol 403 for some ridiculously low price on Ebay yesterday but I notice it's not listed anymore!!
As always, buyers beware!!!

Indeed there's something very fishy about this... seems to bear all the hallmarks of a scam, i.e. attractive price, don't contact me through ebay, zero feedback, scant info about the car etc etc.

Very very dodgy, what appears to be text is actually a picture.
I bet the pictures were just copied from somewhere, probably another listing.

Yes, the same pickup was advertised on ebay recently (with the same photos) and sold for £8,950 on 1st November: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUSTIN-MORRIS ... 7675.l2557

A bit of a difference between that selling price and the current £3,100 'buy it now' one :-? There are loads of scams out there and if something seems too good to be true it usually is!

I hope someone hasn't 'bought' it and sent money to the 'seller' :(

If it sounds TOO good to be true, it probably is!!

Keep your money in your wallet/purse until you've seen the vehicle "in the metal", the identification plates match and you are 100% satisfied that all is good!

ANY doubts, walk away!!
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

and they have assured me that propper action will be taken against this seller!
e.g. not refunding his/her listing fees?

No offence meant of course, but once upon a time having reported fraudulent behaviour from a seller, they didn't get a ban.

Buyer beware - pay up 'if and when' the deal turns out to be real. Be prepared to lose your deposit if you have to pay one before you've seen the car. It's sometimes better to lose the deposit than to buy a bad car :( and if you're both genuine you can sometimes circumvent the seller's deposit requirements (e.g. turning up ASAP with cash)

Asking for a deposit is not a bad sign, due to the number of silly games played by the buyers, however your chances of getting a deposit returned are low if the car is poor or as in this case - none existant.

Just to flag up that this pick up is again being listed on ebay with the same 'MO' as before - same photos, seller with zero feedback offering a cheap 'buy it now price' and asking people not to contact them through ebay messaging:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1969-AUSTIN-M ... 460d91f57c

Edit: It's now been removed from ebay. In case it comes up again, it was a persian blue austin morris pickup with a tan tonneau cover in extremely good condition - number plate not visible in the photos.

Regardless of what car it is make sure you report these as soon as you see them. There have been a few recently, different cars and each time I spot one I report it and it gets removed straight away. They are simple to spot so don't let the scammers think they can be on eBay long enough to hook some unsuspecting naive people.

I did report this to Ebay and they did absolutely nothing. They reporting page is useless as there is nowhere you can put any details about why you are reporting the item.
Just hope whoever bought it didn't get a nasty shock.
