If nothing works - the only way forward will be to separate all the wires - and feed power down to each indicator bulb in turn to see how they respond. The earlier comment about a sidelight glowing means a bad earth at least on that lamp unit. But could also indicate a crossfeed between the indicator and sidelight circuits.

Thanks everyone for replies. Will try and feed power to each lamp/holder individually and see what happens, and work back from that. The wiring is a mess and complete bonkers, as i found 2 wires joined together using insulating tape :o makes me wonder what else has been bodged

I will report back with progress etc

You might want to invest in a new wiring loom
