Indicator gremlins!

Post by quirky292 »

Hi all

Have replaced my indicator flasher unit (the can thing) today as the indicators didn't work at all.
Replaced it and still nothing at all, all i get is the tell tale light flashing in both left/right.
I have no indicators front or rear, and the bulbs in the front are new and been tested. Firstly i got a sidelight flashing but now nothing lights anywhere with the indicator stalk.

The car is a 1961 4 door saloon with traffictors that aren't wired up. But has the late type indicators/sidelights combined, with traveller style rear lights. Also to note most of the colours aren't correct either.
Is there another switch/relay/fuse/ or something to check/replace or have i got to clean every connector and earth??

Many thanks Jon

If you want the trafficators to work with the indicators there is a wiring diagram on http://seriesmm.mmoc.org.uk Tech. Info, trafficator/ indicator wiring diagram
If the warning light is working and the indicators are not, check wiring to flasher unit,
Green Term. B
Green/Brown Term. L
Light Green Term. P
If still not working connect term B and L together and operate indicator switch. Indicators should light but not flash which means flasher unit is faulty You should have a 42+5W 3 pin flasher
Check each indicator light is earthed and if necessary check wiring continuity to indicators and all connectors
Correct colours :- fuse to flasher - Green, flasher to warning light - Light Green, flasher to switch - Green/Brown
switch to left indicators F&R - Green/Red, switch to right indicators F&R - Green/White

Sounds like your cars indicators have been modified. Do you now have amber indicators? This had been done on my 62 and it took me ages to sort.

Why did you change the flasher can? Put the old one back on. Sidelight flashing tells me there is a bad earth at that light.

Ok many thanks for your replies

The car currently has trafficators installed but are Not working. And on the front has combined sidelights and indicators, with traveller style rear lights.

I changed the flasher can as originally nothing worked at all. No stalk tell tale, No flashing outside what so ever. So after reading a few posts on here i decided to buy 2 new ones from ESM. After fitting the new one this is where im at.

Thanks Mike i will give it ago soon with changing the terminals to see if the bulb just lights up

Many thanks all

A 62 car would have had indicators operated through a relay, a 61 car had trafficators and the indicators are an add on

Forget the flasher can - just join the wires together temporarily - what works now when you move the lever ??

Mike, by trafficators do you mean the front side lights and rear brakelights flash using the 8 way relay?
Mine had this but a previous owner had bypassed the 8 way relay and had fitted amber flashing indicators using ALL yellow wires, hence the problem sorting it. I now have the later system using the correct colour wires. This seemed easier than going back to the 8 way relay which I assume must have been faulty.

Indicators are the flashing lights, trafficators are the little arms which stick out of the side.
Up to '61 had trafficators, '62-'64 had a relay which flashed the appropriate brake light when indicating and '64 on had normal indicators.
This applies to the home market and dates are approximate.

No response then on the 'test' without a flasher can and all the wires set together........ This will tell us what's actually going on.

Havent had the time/weather to go and sort this out yet!
Im hopefully trying to sort this out this afternoon, but my other car has now developed an electrical fault with indicators too which is more important

Will post back this afternoon with some results hopefully

Sounds like bad connection at the fusebox feed....or the fuse holder/fuse. When was the 'glow' - immediately? or When you moved the indicator arm?

When i moved the indicator arm.
But couldn't repeat this again, even with indicator arm down or not.

Check the fuse, you could have a short circuit to earth which is blowing the fuse. Check wipers and brake lights, they are on the same fuse.

Thanks for clearing that up. I have always known the arms that come out of the door pillar as semaphores.

Back to Quirky292's problem.... If you have taken the wires off the flasher relay and joined them as BMCEcosse has suggested then I cannot see how the stalk is flashing.

You said at the start that the wires were the wrong colours. I think that you need to get a test light and find out exactly which wires go where.
It is no good me telling you to connect a green to a green/brown when you have not got those colours
