Put your carb in abox

Post by lowride stepside »

As some of you might know I'm currently fitting a super charger to my old truck on a blow though basis . One of the issuse's i have is sealing my carb , i could buy an metro turbo carb , or I could put my exsisting carb in an air tight ish box n pressure ize the box . Ive found the sort of box that will do it . Cast ally completly water proof electrical enclosure ,.
Any one heard of this ?, or tried it .apparently it's quite an old skool supercharging trick .

I don't understand why you want to make it so complicated - just suck through!!!!!

I don't want to suck, I wonna blow ,you get more power better throttle response. If you suck you cant use an inter cooler . All the suck setups bolt the charger on top of the manifold , which i don't have, more expence coz there not cheap . bolting the charger there you've got the heat from the exhaust manifold plus the heat generated by compressing the air in the charger .So buy the time its going into the cylinder its all hot and expanded ,and according to a few guys in the mini club the carbs ice up too ,and if they were going to do it again they'ed all blow .
On a blow system it can go through an InterCooler contracting the charge with the fuel added at last second .
An engine will always run better on a cold morning because the air is contracted and there are more gas molecules per ltr so when it ignites and expands there's more gas to start with more oxygene more force more power.

I took a look on the custom and modified section of this forum on an unrelated topic recently and stumbled across a great deal of information on fitting turbo and superchargers.
I think if anyone knows they will, as for me I dont get it, but, "vive le difference" or as they say in these parts "whatever floats your boat pet" good luck.

It's a LOT more trouble to fit blow through and intercooler -yet earlier you said you just want a gentle increase in power..... Good luck with it.....

A piece from here an a piece from there , Just bought a turbo carb n plenum for peanuts tho i;m still gonna try the box thing . Its coming together surprizingley quickley , tho if my misses found out what i was buying and how much I'de spent she'd have a fit (all part of the fun)
Once I sell all the stuff I dont need I reckon the cost wil be under £500

You'll need more than a gentle increase in power to equal a modern car! I'm amazed how even the smallest get a move on. :D

I would think you will need at least 100bhp at the flywheel to get a genuine 100mph. Looking at the log on our GPS, which we only used on the way down to Spain, and then back from central France, as part of the MSA Euroclassic a few weeks ago, we have a maximum speed of 105mph (can't remember doing it, or where!). I would think our 1380 would probably top 110, but not much more, and that is with 112bhp at the flywheel on a rolling road.

I agree - it's going to be beyond a 1098 to give 100 mph with silly visor.......or even without!

Its a 1275 with an overdrive box, LCB, hif 44 , K an N, and if i took the visor off i;m sure it would hit 90
So surley with a bit of boost it would do the ton

Oh sorry - mixed up the threads - thought it was a 1098. There is some hope then!

My trav used to be able to do 95 (GPS) with a 1275 with LCB, 1.75" RC-40 exhaust and a 276 cam. I think that was putting out about 90hp

It shouldn't need much of a push to get the ton i reckon it would deffo do 90 without the visor,
Might even take it off n try

Seems a quaint expression nowadays--do a ton! Especially as most cars do 140 today.---- ' A burn up on my bike' :D

its an exponential curve... you probably need 50% more poke to get that extra 10% speed...

So if I removed my visor Ide be on par with your old taveller top speed wise , and you reckon you I'de need an extra 50% more power to gain another 9.5 mph , so i'm looking for 135 BHP to do 104 mph . Are you sure mat ?
I'm not saying you don't know what your talking about , coz ive seen some of yer threads but i reckon 25 ~ 30% would be more than enough and thats based on the fact that ive probably only got 70 ~80 Bhp at the crank at the mo

Ask Jono at JLH how much power their Trav has - and what the top speed is.... Otherwise it's all just guesswork.
